google words

September 26, 2008

like most people, i'm a fan of google. I didn't shit myself when that cuil search engine came out a couple months ago and faded quietly into the internet abyss and when i see someone trying to do a search with anything else i usually end up pushing them away, doing a google search and finding whatever it was we were looking for pretty quickly. (that could also be because i'm awesome at searching for things).

one of the things that i think is so cool about google is their whole approach to business. i'm sure they wouldnt put it this way but it seems like their motto is "cool and simple".  give the people what they want and make it cool and simple. except one thing.

the google blog.

uses

too

many

damn

words.

I never read it. I'm sure it's chock full of good information, but i expect something more awesome from google. charts, pictures, bullets. something.

greasy

Efficiency is a funny thing.

It's extremely important when there's minimal time permitted. for most, including myself, pre-work morning is one of those times. gotta get up, shower, brush teeth, feed the hounds, take them out, wait for them to shit while they sniff around for rabbits, bring them in, treat them, make myself breakfast, get my meals for the day ready, get dressed, look presentable, etc etc

Somewhere in there i usually try to put some hair gel or something in my hair so i dont look like a fuzzball all day and it looks like i actually give a damn how i look.

here's where it get's tricky - if I dont wash my hair it gets greasy. fact of life. happens to most of us.

grease can make hair look like it has gel in it.

if I wanted to be more efficient i could just not wash my hair (save some time and money) then just use the wet grease to hold it in place (save more time and money).

 but that would be gross.

not a numbers guy, but a numbers guy

September 19, 2008

a tail light went out on my truck. brake light, turn signal. it's been out for a while. I like to blame my hectic schedule and lack of funding for my inability to stop by the auto zone that's less than 2 miles from my house, but that's certainly up for debate.

it's the left one. the right one still works fine, ticks, lights, does all the shit it's supposed to. the left one is out though.

last night on the way home from school i started thinking about why only my left one went out. Did I turn left more than right? surely not. When I go places I usually come back the same way and all the lefts become rights and vice versa. then i started thinking about how many left turns i make and how many right turns and tried to quantify turns in my head. i jumped to the thought that it would be great to have some data to analyze. i would love to see the number of turns for each side, time spent per turn and then maybe match that to a map through GPS to see where i'm expending the life of my turn signal bulbs.

I scared myself. I really did. I'm not a numbers guy. I wouldn't say that I LOVE data and it rocks my world. "I'm a creative guy!" I was screaming at myself, "outside the box is where my head is!" but apparently data does rock my shit. apparently i've been conditioned to use data to explain things. i've always been sort of analytical (and cynical, while we're at it) by nature, so i guess this is just me wanting a simple easy way to explain a phenomenon in the most exact way possible.

without  having my data, i would say that the light probably went out because you have to wait at left turns more than right, but that would be too simple wouldnt it?

i started reading the 10 point manifesto on how to work more better

September 18, 2008

i got bored with it on the 2nd or 3rd one. this tells me 2 things:

1. maybe a good way for me to start working better would be to read things, follow through, follow up, etc

2. maybe a good way for me to start working better isn't to start a blog again.

Seriously though, I think most people know how to work better, they just don't. Maybe I'll learn why in one of my management classes. COLLEGE IS THE ANSWER!!!
