a tail light went out on my truck. brake light, turn signal. it's been out for a while. I like to blame my hectic schedule and lack of funding for my inability to stop by the auto zone that's less than 2 miles from my house, but that's certainly up for debate.
it's the left one. the right one still works fine, ticks, lights, does all the shit it's supposed to. the left one is out though.
last night on the way home from school i started thinking about why only my left one went out. Did I turn left more than right? surely not. When I go places I usually come back the same way and all the lefts become rights and vice versa. then i started thinking about how many left turns i make and how many right turns and tried to quantify turns in my head. i jumped to the thought that it would be great to have some data to analyze. i would love to see the number of turns for each side, time spent per turn and then maybe match that to a map through GPS to see where i'm expending the life of my turn signal bulbs.
I scared myself. I really did. I'm not a numbers guy. I wouldn't say that I LOVE data and it rocks my world. "I'm a creative guy!" I was screaming at myself, "outside the box is where my head is!" but apparently data does rock my shit. apparently i've been conditioned to use data to explain things. i've always been sort of analytical (and cynical, while we're at it) by nature, so i guess this is just me wanting a simple easy way to explain a phenomenon in the most exact way possible.
without having my data, i would say that the light probably went out because you have to wait at left turns more than right, but that would be too simple wouldnt it?
